Nutrition and weight control, more difficult for diabetics

The daily diet control and weight are the most difficult aspects of treatment of diabetes for patients and health professionals, compared to other more acceptable as the administration of drugs, exercise or “prick” every day to control levels glucose, according to a survey by the Social Observatory of Diabetes (OSD).

Consumption of alcohol increases risk of prostate cancer

Excessive alcohol consumption has been linked to diseases such as breast and gastric cancer, however a new study opens up other possibilities and it relates to prostate cancer.

It is believed that alcohol accelerates the metabolism of cancer cells and this causes it to develop a more aggressive cancer, experts say.

The new study was conducted by doctors in Holland Center and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research recently published in the journal Cancer. It pointed out that excessive consumption of alcohol, especially beer, cause it to quickly develop a highly aggressive prostate cancer, whose chances of survival are less than 50%. (more…)

Associated traffic and dust to asthma in children

Asthma in childrenResearchers say children exposed to traffic pollution outdoors and indoor endotoxin, are at increased risk of asthma.

Endotoxin, a component of the bacteria believed to trigger an immune response in humans, found in the dust.

Researchers at the School of Medicine, University of Cincinnati found persistent wheezing (a warning sign of asthma and other lung problems) in 36 percent of children aged three years who had been exposed to high levels of traffic pollution and endotoxin indoors when they were babies. (more…)

Announce progress against metastasis in breast cancer

SRC protein attack has proved effective in slowing the process of metastasis in breast cancer and other tumor cells lodge in vital organs like the lungs or brain, and can spread the disease, said researcher Joan Massagué, Deputy Director of the Institute of Biomedical Research.

Painkillers may reduce effectiveness of vaccines in children

It is common after a vaccine is recommended to give babies acetaminophen to prevent fever, however, a new research conducted at the Military College of Health Sciences, University of Defence in the Czech Republic and published in the Lancet says that painkillers such as acetaminophen, may reduce the effectiveness of immunization and could cause more harm than good.

The study was conducted with 450 newborn infants vaccinated against pneumococcal disease, Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type B), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, polio and rotavirus. (more…)
