Music therapy may reduce the pain responseAccording to a new study, listening to music may help reduce an individual’s response to chronic pain.

Music has been used as a tool for healing since ancient times. Music therapy may involve both listening and touching, and has been used to improve the quality of life as well as the physical, emotional and cognitive development of people of all ages.

The researchers looked at 153 healthy volunteers who performed tasks that involved listening to tones or background music. Participants received three levels of stimulus intensity during the task. Scientists collected data on pupil dilation, the potential evoked by the stimuli and responses driving the skin to determine its net commitment to the music. (more…)

Meditation may reduce pain

Meditation may reduce painThe practice just 20 minutes of mindfulness meditation (Mindfulness) a day can help relieve pain, researchers report in the professional journal “The Journal of Neuroscience”.

The study included 18 healthy adults who had never meditated. Participants underwent four sessions of 20 minutes of training in mindfulness meditation. This form of meditation is to focus on breathing and on releasing all thoughts that may distract the practitioner.

Before and after meditation, participants were exposed to painful stimuli while undergoing brain scans using a technique called arterial spin labeling functional magnetic resonance imaging. To stimulate pain, placed a device that generates 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius) heat in the leg of each participant. The device was kept on the skin for 12 seconds intervals for a total of five minutes. (more…)

Stress Reduction, Meditation and Breast Cancer SurvivorsA new study suggests that stress reduction programs mindfulness meditation (MBSR) could benefit breast cancer survivors.

The MBSR is a structured, standardized method for teaching stress reduction groups. The term was originally used MBSR by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., to name a program used in patients with pain that incorporated the principles of mindfulness meditation (mindfulness) traditional yoga and awareness techniques body.

The MBSR teaches the use of focused attention (often by using a physical sensation, such as breathing) on a single target at a time. Whenever thoughts intrude, the person simply return your attention or focus to the original target. The MBSR also encourages the patient to focus on the present rather than future or the past. This practice has proven effective in some clinical applications, such as chronic pain. (more…)
