The easiest way to avoid excessive exposure to ultraviolet light is to stay away from the sun and the shade whenever possible.

This is particularly important at midday when UV light is more intense.

* Protect yourself with clothing, including a shirt and a brimmed hat. In general, tightly woven fabrics offer the best protection against the sun. Sunglasses that offer good coverage, with a percentage of UV absorption of 99% to 100%, optimally protect the eyes and the skin area around them.

* The sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more factor should be used in areas of skin exposed to sunlight, particularly when the sunlight is intense. People with fair skin and burn easily which should apply the sunscreen.

By applying the lotion, follow the instructions. To make this effective, it must be applied before sun exposure and use in all areas of skin exposed to sunlight. Many sunscreen lotions lose efficacy when a person sweats or anything, and be reapplied to offer maximum protection. You must use lotion though the day is hazy and the sky is overcast or low light, compact, and that ultraviolet light can pass through them.

*Do not use tanning booths. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet light may increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

A necessary guidance
In Chile between 1998 and 2008, around 200 people died from this disease, two times more than in the previous decade, according to the latest report from the National Cancer Corporation (CONAC). According to the World Health Organization, each year some 48,000 people die because of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. However, this could significantly decrease if taken appropriate precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, in Chile between 1998 and 2008, around 200 people died from this disease, two times more than in the previous decade, according to the latest report from the National Cancer Corporation (CONAC).

That’s why, German Clinic conducted by the eighth consecutive year, “prevention campaign that seeks to promote the protection of this organ, the largest body.

The program targets men and women of all ages and provides a consultation with a specialist and biopsy suspicious lesions or moles preferred securities. “The idea of this initiative is to promote early detection of skin cancer, because early diagnosis allows successful treatment,

Self-examination is essential
One advantage to be seized for the early detection of skin cancer that is the only malignant tumor that is visible. Just check the skin regularly to see if any new moles, and evaluate the appearance of the ancients.

The types of malignant skin tumors are three: basal cell carcinoma, which can present as a nonhealing wound or a wound that grows, the squamous cell or squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma, which is the most aggressive and can develop in an existing mole or in previously healthy skin.

Recommendations
- No exposure to the sun during peak radiation (Between 10 and 16 hours)
- Wear sunglasses with UV-A and UV-B
- Use hats and cotton clothing
- Wear sunscreen even in the shade or on cloudy days
- Eliminate artificial means of radiation (solarium)
- Consult a physician before an itchy mole that grows or changes color
- Consult a physician before a wound that will not heal spontaneously
