
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck, formed by 2 lobes on the right and 2 on the left, connected to the center. The thyroid produces, stores and releases thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) acting within almost all body cells and allow the regulation of extremely important functions such as metabolism.
Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor that affects the thyroid gland. Generally the older thyroid cells are replaced by new cells constantly and regularly. Sometimes a few cells grow abnormally without following the normal cycle of growth and continue to grow and reproduce in an uncontrolled manner, forming a tumor. (more…)
