do sodas fattening?Who accompany their meals and daily activities with soft light do strongly believe that these drinks are your allies in the struggle to lose some extra kilos, or at least not keep adding.

An American study suggests that light or diet sodas are not as dietary and appear: not only help you lose weight, but often have the opposite effect.

The authors of the San Antonio Heart Study, Texas, presented their findings at the annual scientific sessions of the American Society of Diabetes, which brings together more than 13,000 physicians and patients, found that the risk of overweight or obese increases by 65% and 41%, respectively, for each can or bottle of 330 ml of diet soda a day.

“The growing incidence of overweight associated with increasing doses of diet sodas in our study raises questions about the confidence of these products in weight loss programs,” said Dr. Sharon Fowler of the Centre for Health Sciences in San Antonio, Texas, and lead author of the study that evaluated for eight years, the daily consumption of soft drinks in 1550 people aged 25 to 64 years.

The researchers found that those with a normal body mass index at baseline, but had taken diet soda during the eight years that were evaluated, the incidence of overweight and obesity was higher than among those who preferred the regular soda. And this trend was directly proportional to the amount of soda consumed, the rate of overweight at the end of the study to those who drank less than one can a day was 26% for non-diet drinkers and 36.5% in diet group, for those who drank one to two cans per day, 32.8% and 54.5%, respectively.

Do Soft Light Dietary?

The reason why diet sodas are less “diet” that common or regular soft drinks, as they call them here in the U.S., is yet to be defined. First, said Dr. Fowler, “it is likely that people who prefer diet sodas, like me,” he admitted, with a family history of obesity, which means that already at increased risk of overweight. ”

Anyway, Fowler argues that there is a sufficient explanation: “light soda makers, do not drink water or fruit juices or milk, which not only have fewer calories, but also in the case of milk, many studies suggesting that a good intake of calcium daily to help lose weight. ”

Furthermore, a recent study by Purdue University, USA, shows that people who take diet sodas tend to consume more dessert then dense than regular soda makers. “They think that because they take diet soda and earned the privilege of adding calories in other parts of your diet,” said Dr. Fowler.

Finally, says this expert in epidemiology and nutrition, “studies suggest that consumption of sugar substitutes [such as sweeteners] alters the body’s ability to measure the amount of calories you need to get through foods. Thus, while our sense of taste tells us that we are eating something sweet and, therefore, high-calorie, our brain is asking for more calories and takes us to eat more. ”

Ultimately, Fowler concluded “the best ally for those who want to lose weight or to increase it is still water.”
