Liver Cirrhosis, Not Just for Alcoholism
The liver is a complex laboratory in which life processes are carried out to the body comes in contact with everything we eat, from water and food to drugs, which, when consumed excessively can affect it seriously.
Responsible for over 500 functions in the body, the liver is composed of cells that carry out chemical transformations that provide the body what it needs to function properly. It is also the site of stored glycogen, proteins, fats and vitamins, which are critical to our energy load. It also undertakes various detoxification processes by eliminating compounds that can be harmful to the body.
There are several factors that cause the liver cells die slowly, and they become fibrous tissue to determine that the liver becomes hard and numerous scars and knots. When this happens is called cirrhosis, third cause of mortality in urban population aged 25 to 65 years in the U.S.. (more…)
