Schizandra (Schisandra chinensis)
Common name: Wu-wei-zi
Parts used and where grown:
Schisandra is a woody vine with numerous clusters of tiny red berries and bright. It is distributed across northern and northeastern China and adjacent regions of Russia and Korea. The fully ripe fruit, dried in the sun is used medicinally. It’s intended to be sour, sweet, salty, spicy and bitter. This unusual combination of flavors is reflected in the name in Chinese:
wu-wei-zi, meaning “the fruit of five tastes.”

An herb used in Oriental medicine that invigorates the Qi (“chee”), a term that more or less translates as “vital energy” or “resistance factor.” The astragalus is useful for general weakness and frequent colds.
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)
Common name: Huang Qi
Parts used and where grown:
Astragalus is native to northern China and the highlands of the Chinese provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan. The portion of the plant used medicinally is the root of plants of four to seven years old. While there are listed 2,000 types of astragalus worldwide, China’s version has been tested extensively, pharmacological and chemically.

Both antiseptic and immune system stimulant, the main component of goldenseal, berberine, activates white blood cells (macrophages) that are responsible for destroying the virus. Several chemical compounds listed in the grass seem to help the berberine in their work.
Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)

Goldenseal is native to eastern North America and is cultivated in Oregon and Washington. It is now seriously threatened in the wild due to indiscriminate over-harvesting. Medicinally used the dried root and rhizome.

Also known as ma huang or ephedra China, this herb is a powerful decongestant. Contains chemicals, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, which opens the bronchial passages. Along with its decongestant action, however, ephedra is also a powerful stimulant that can raise blood pressure and cause insomnia. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about ephedra and only start with a mild tea made from the herb.
Ephedra
(Ephedra sinica, ephedra intermediate ephedra equisetina)
Common name: Ma huang
Parts used and where grown:
Ephedra is a bulbous plant found in desert regions throughout the world. Dispatched from northern China to Inner Mongolia. The dried green stems of the three Asian species (E. sinica, E. intermedia, E. equisetina) are the parts of the plant used medicinally. The North American species of ephedra do not appear to contain the active ingredients of its Asian counterparts. (more…)

Active Components
Flavonoids, including quercetin, are believed to explain the therapeutic actions of flowers and berries of the elderberry. According to laboratory research, an extract of the leaves, combined with St. John’s wort and soapwort inhibit the influenza virus and herpes virus simplex. Study in humans found that an extract of elderberries is an effective treatment for influenza. Animal studies have shown the flowers have characteristics anti-inflamatory.
How should I take?
The liquid extract of elderberry is taken in quantities of 5 ml (for children) to 10 ml (for adults) twice a day. A tea made from 3-5 grams of dried flowers steeped in 250 ml (1 cup) boiling water for ten to fifteen minutes you can also drink three times a day. (more…)

The elder grows in Europe and North America. The flowers and berries are used therapeutically. There are numerous species of elder, and only those with berries blue / black are medicinal. Species with red berries are not medicinal.

Actions anti-nausea/anti-vomit
The research is inconclusive as to how ginger acts to alleviate nausea. Ginger may act directly on the gastrointestinal system and can affect the central nervous system that causes nausea. June 5 may be that ginger exerts a dual effect in reducing nausea and vomiting. Double-blind research has shown that ginger reduces nausea after surgery, although another study could not confirm this advantage.
However, the common antinausea drug was also ineffective dropericol in this study. 9 Other studies have found ginger helpful in preventing travel sickness in 10 chemotherapy-induced nausea and nausea of pregnancy. (more…)

Antimicrobial action
Garlic has anti-bacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. It may work against some intestinal parasites. Garlic appears to have approx. 1% the strength of penicillin against certain types of bacteria.
This means it is not a substitute for antibiotics but can be considered as an aid against bacterial infections. The development of Candida albicans is inhibited by garlic, and garlic has shown long-term benefit for recurrent yeast infections. However, controlled studies on humans have yet to demonstrate the benefits of garlic for yeast infections. (more…)

The common cold is the most common disease that attacks the upper airways. It is caused by more than 100 types of viruses that attach to the cells of the nasal passage and sinus, resulting in symptoms such as sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, dry cough and sometimes fever.
The virus is spread directly from person to person through coughing, sneezing or hand to hand contact. The virus can also live for several hours on surfaces such as countertops and door opener. Half the adult suffers two to three colds per year. On average, young children can get up to nine. If you are having more than half of colds that suits you, it is possible that your immune system may need assistance.
