Schizandra (Schisandra chinensis)

Common name: Wu-wei-zi

Parts used and where grown:

Schisandra is a woody vine with numerous clusters of tiny red berries and bright. It is distributed across northern and northeastern China and adjacent regions of Russia and Korea. The fully ripe fruit, dried in the sun is used medicinally. It’s intended to be sour, sweet, salty, spicy and bitter. This unusual combination of flavors is reflected in the name in Chinese:
wu-wei-zi, meaning “the fruit of five tastes.”

Schizandra has been used in connection with the following conditions (refer to the individual health concern for complete information):

The classic treatise on Chinese herbal medicine, Shen Nung Pen Tsao Ching Shen Nung, schisandra described as a high-grade herbal medicine useful for a wide variety of medical conditions – especially as an astringent tonic lung and kidney. In addition, other textbooks of traditional Chinese medicine Schisandra note that is useful for coughs, night sweats, insomnia, thirst, and fatigue. 2

Active Components

Schizandra contains a number of compounds, including essential oils, many acids and lignans. Lignans (schizandrina, deoxischizandrina, gomisins and pregomisina) are in the seeds of the fruit and have various medicinal actions. Modern Chinese research suggests that lignans regenerate liver tissue damaged by harmful influences such as viral hepatitis and alcohol. Lignans lower blood levels of glutamic pyruvic transaminase serum (TGPS), a marker of infectious hepatitis and other liver disorders. Lignans also interfere with platelet activating factor, a chemical compound that produces inflammation in various conditions. The standardized extracts of Schisandra fruits have gained popularity for use in race horses gallop no good for reasons related to elevated liver enzyme.

Schisandra fruit may also have an adaptogenic action, like ginseng, but with weaker effects. Laboratory studies suggest that Schisandra can improve job performance, generate energy and help reduce fatigue. 6

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)

Common name: Huang Qi

Parts used and where grown:

Astragalus is native to northern China and the highlands of the Chinese provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan. The portion of the plant used medicinally is the root of plants of four to seven years old. While there are listed 2,000 types of astragalus worldwide, China’s version has been tested extensively, pharmacological and chemically.

Astragalus has been used in connection with the following conditions (refer to the individual health concern for complete information):

Medicinal use

- Chemotherapy Help
- Cold sore
- Immune function
- Infection

Historical or traditional use (may or may not be used by scientific studies):

Shen Nung, the founder of Chinese herbal medicine, classified astragalus as a superior herb in his classical Pen Tsao Ching (circa AD 100) of the Treaty of Shen Nung. The Chinese called huang qi translates as “yellow leader,” referring to the yellow root and its status as one of the most important tonic herbs. Traditional Chinese Medicine used this herb for deficiency of chi (eg, fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite), and diarrhea.

Active Components

Astragalus contains numerous components, including flavonoids, polysaccharides, triterpene glycosides (eg, astragalosides I-VII), amino acids, and minerals rastro.3 tube studies preliminary test showed that astragalus may help restore some immune activity in patients cancer.4 has shown efficacy as a diuretic and treatment for congestive heart syndrome in the studies animals.

How should I take?

Textbooks on Chinese herbs recommend taking 9-15 grams of raw herb per day in decoction form. A decoction is made by boiling the root in water for a few minutes and then develop the area. Supplements typically contain 500 mg. the talus. Two to three tablets or capsules or 3-5 ml of tincture three times daily are often recommended.

There are side effects or interactions?

Astragalus has no known side effects when used as recommended.

Both antiseptic and immune system stimulant, the main component of goldenseal, berberine, activates white blood cells (macrophages) that are responsible for destroying the virus. Several chemical compounds listed in the grass seem to help the berberine in their work.

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)

Parts used and where grown:

Goldenseal is native to eastern North America and is cultivated in Oregon and Washington. It is now seriously threatened in the wild due to indiscriminate over-harvesting. Medicinally used the dried root and rhizome.

The Goldenseal has been used in connection with the following conditions (refer to the individual health concern for complete information).

Medicinal use

- Other Common cold throat
- Conjunctivitis/blepharitis
- Crohn’s Disease
- Diarrhea
- Influenza
- Parasites
- Urinary tract infection
- Vaginitis

Historical or traditional use (may or may not be supported by scientific studies)

Goldenseal was used by Native Americans as a treatment for irritations and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tracts, digestive and urinary tracts. It was commonly used topically for skin infections and eye. Because of its antimicrobial activity, goldenseal has a long history of use for infectious diarrhea, infections of upper respiratory areas, and vaginal infections. Goldenseal is often recommended in combination with echinacea for treating colds and flu. Goldenseal was considered a critical remedy for stomach and intestinal problems of all sorts that doctors at the beginning of the twentieth century called Eclectic.

Active Components

The two primary alkaloids in goldenseal are hydrastine and berberine, along with smaller amounts of canadine. Little research has been done with the goldenseal for itself. Berberine, which ranges from 0.5 to 6.0% of the alkaloids present in goldenseal root and rhizome, has been investigated as widely as possible. Seems to have a broad spectrum of anti-pathogen antibiotic activity, such as Chlamydia species, typhoid, E. coli, Salmonella, and Entamoeba histolytica. 2 Studies in humans have used isolated berberine to treat diarrhea and gastroenteritis with good results. 3 whole root has not been studied clinically.

How should I take?

Most people take supplements, 4-6 grams of powdered goldenseal root and rhizome per day in tablets or capsules. For liquid herbal extracts are used 2-4 ml three times per day. Continuous use should not exceed three weeks with a break of at least two weeks between use. Goldenseal powder as a tea or tincture may soothe sore throats.

Due to environmental concerns of over-harvesting, many herbalists recommend alternatives to goldenseal, such as grapes or goldenthread Oregon.

There are side effects or interactions?

Taking as recommended, goldenseal is generally safe. However, as with all alkaloid containing plants, high amounts may lead to gastrointestinal disorders and nervous system side effects. Goldenseal is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women. Although some traditional reports, goldenseal is not a substitute for antibiotics.

Information

Contains chemicals, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, which opens the bronchial passages. Along with its decongestant action, however, ephedra is also a powerful stimulant that can raise blood pressure and cause insomnia. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about ephedra and only start with a mild tea made from the herb.

Ephedra
(Ephedra sinica, ephedra intermediate ephedra equisetina)

Common name: Ma huang

Parts used and where grown:

Ephedra is a bulbous plant found in desert regions throughout the world. Dispatched from northern China to Inner Mongolia. The dried green stems of the three Asian species (E. sinica, E. intermedia, E. equisetina) are the parts of the plant used medicinally. The North American species of ephedra do not appear to contain the active ingredients of its Asian counterparts.

Ephedra has been used in connection with the following conditions (refer to the individual health concern for complete information)

Medicinal use

- Secondary Asthma
- Cough
- Weight loss and obesity.
- Other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Congestion

Historical or traditional use (may or may not be supported by scientific studies):

The Chinese have used ephedra medicinally for over 5,000 years. Ephedra is listed as one of the herbs from the original 365 in the classic texts of Chinese herbalism by Shen Nong. Century (AD) 1 The traditional medicinal uses include the alleviation of ephedra sweating, lung and bronchial constriction, and water retention. Cough, shortness of breath, the common cold, and fevers without sweat are all indications for its use. While the active ingredient, ephedrine, was isolated in 1887, it was not until 1924 that the herb became popular among doctors because of their characteristics and decongestants. bronchodilator

Active Components

The main active medicinal ingredients of ephedra are ephedrine and pseudoephedrine alkaloids. The stem contains 1-3% total alkaloids, with ephedrine statistics for 30-90% of this total, depending on the plant species used. ephedrine 3 and their counterparts synthesized stimulate the central nervous system, dilate the bronchial tubes, elevate blood pressure and increase heart rate. Pseudoephedrine (the synthetic form) is a remedy to counter popular for the improvement of nasal congestion. Little research has been done on the whole plant (compared to its isolated alkaloids) utilizing its use for any condition.

How should I take?

The crude powdered stems of ephedra (with less than 1% ephedrine) are used in a dose of 1-4 grams per day in tea form. Dyes 1-4 ml three times per day can be taken. Counter medicines containing ephedrine can be used safely by adults at a dose of 12.5-25 mg. every four hours. Adults should take no more than 150 mg. every twenty-four hours. Pseudoephedrine is typically recommended at a dose of 60 mg. every six hours.

There are side effects or interactions?

Ephedra has a long history of safe use in the recommended amount. However, abuse of ephedra (and particularly ephedrine) – especially when used ‘for weight loss or as a recreational drug – can lead to effects similar to amphetamine side effects including high blood pressure, muscle disorders , insomnia, dry mouth, heart palpitations, nervousness, and even death due to heart failure. One study has shown that a single dose of ephedra caused mild elevation of heart rate but did not affect blood pressure continuously in adults otherwise healthy.

Anyone with high blood pressure, heart conditions, diabetes, glaucoma, thyroid disease, and those taking MAO inhibitor antidepressants such as phenelzine, you should consult a physician before using any product with ephedra. Pseudoephedrine can cause drowsiness and should be used with caution if driving or operating machinery. Ephedra based products should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation and used with caution in children younger than six years.

Information

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra)

Parts used and place they grown

The elder grows in Europe and North America. The flowers and berries are used therapeutically. There are numerous species of elder, and only those with berries blue / black are medicinal. Species with red berries are not medicinal.

Elderberry has been used in connection with the following conditions (refer to the individual health concern for complete information).

Medicinal use

- Cold secondary throat
- Infection
- Flu
- Another herpes simplex Dolores
- Inflammation

The research is inconclusive as to how ginger acts to alleviate nausea. Ginger may act directly on the gastrointestinal system and can affect the central nervous system that causes nausea. June 5 may be that ginger exerts a dual effect in reducing nausea and vomiting. Double-blind research has shown that ginger reduces nausea after surgery, although another study could not confirm this advantage.

However, the common antinausea drug was also ineffective dropericol in this study. 9 Other studies have found ginger helpful in preventing travel sickness in 10 chemotherapy-induced nausea and nausea of pregnancy.

Circulatory actions

Ginger also helps maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. Like garlic, ginger makes blood platelets less sticky and less likely to accumulate, but not all human research has confirmed this. A high dose (10 grams) of ginger may inhibit platelet aggregation excessive in humans, but lower doses taken for a longer time did not seem to have this effect. This reduces a major risk factor for atherosclerosis.

How should I take?

Most people take 2-4 grams of dry rhizome powder two to three times per day or a tincture of 1.5-3 ml three times daily. For treatment of nausea, people test doses of about 250-500 mg. every two to three hours. For prevention of travel sickness, many people start taking ginger tablets, capsules, liquid herbal extract or two days before the planned visit. Pregnant women should not exceed 1 gram daily.

Are there side effects or interactions?

Side effects of ginger are rare when used as recommended. However, some people may be sensitive to taste or may experience heartburn. People with a history of gallstones should consult a doctor before using ginger. The short-term use of ginger for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy appears to pose no security problem, but long-term use during pregnancy is not recommended. A doctor should be informed if ginger is used before surgery. Do not use ginger if you are taking anticoagulant drugs.

Information

Information on the effects of a supplement or herb given in a particular condition has been described in terms of methodology or source of supporting data (eg clinical double-blind, meta-analysis, or use traditional).
Garlic has anti-bacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. It may work against some intestinal parasites. Garlic appears to have approx. 1% the strength of penicillin against certain types of bacteria.

This means it is not a substitute for antibiotics but can be considered as an aid against bacterial infections. The development of Candida albicans is inhibited by garlic, and garlic has shown long-term benefit for recurrent yeast infections. However, controlled studies on humans have yet to demonstrate the benefits of garlic for yeast infections.

Anticancer actions

The human population studies show that eating garlic regularly reduces the risk of cancer of the esophagus, stomach, and colon. 13 This is partly due to garlic’s ability to reduce the formation of carcinogenic compounds. Studies in laboratory animals and also show that garlic and its sulfur compounds inhibit the growth of various types of cancer – especially breast tumors and skin.

How should I take?

Some people chew a whole clove of raw garlic per day. For those who prefer it, and to avoid the smell of garlic, tablets or capsules with 400-500 mg standardized potential. of allicin can be taken once or twice per day (providing 5,000 mcg. allicin potential).

Are there side effects or interactions?

Most people enjoy garlic, however, some individuals who are sensitive to it may experience heartburn and flatulence. Because of the anticoagulation properties of garlic, people taking anticoagulant drugs should check with your doctor before taking garlic. Members to be operated with surgery should inform their surgeon if they are taking garlic supplements. There are no known contraindications to use during pregnancy and lactation. In fact, two studies have shown that babies prefer breast milk better from mothers who eat ajo.14 15

Information

Information on the effects of a supplement or herb given in a particular condition has been described in terms of methodology or source of supporting data (eg clinical double-blind, meta-analysis, or use traditional). For the convenience of the reader, the information in the vector listing the supplements for particular conditions is also categorized. The criteria for classifications are: “primary” indicates that no reliable scientific data showing a relatively constant help in the disease. “Secondary” indicates that there is conflict, scarce, or only preliminary studies suggesting an aid in disease or aid in disease is minimal. “Other” indicates that there is little scientific support and/or assists in minimal disease.

The common cold is the most common disease that attacks the upper airways. It is caused by more than 100 types of viruses that attach to the cells of the nasal passage and sinus, resulting in symptoms such as sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, dry cough and sometimes fever.

The virus is spread directly from person to person through coughing, sneezing or hand to hand contact. The virus can also live for several hours on surfaces such as countertops and door opener. Half the adult suffers two to three colds per year. On average, young children can get up to nine. If you are having more than half of colds that suits you, it is possible that your immune system may need assistance.

Garlic

Contains several useful components to combat colds and flu, including allicin, one of the most potent broad-spectrum antibiotic of the Kingdom of the plants.

Historical or traditional use (may or may not be supported by scientific studies)

Garlic is mentioned in the Bible and Talmud. Hippocrates, Galen, Pliny the Elder, and Dioscorides all mention the use of garlic for a large number of conditions, including parasites, respiratory problems, poor digestion and low energy. Its use in China was first mentioned for the first time the year 510 AD Louis Pasteur confirmed the antibacterial action of garlic in 1858.

Active Ingredients

The sulfur compound called allicin produced by crushing or chewing fresh garlic, turn produces other sulfur compounds: ajoene, allyl sulfide, and vinilditíinas.1

If you want to know the full phytochemical analysis of this herb, wrote his English name, garlic in the form of database Dr.Duke

Cardiovascular actions

Many publications have shown that garlic supports the cardiovascular system. You can gently lowering levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, inhibit platelet stickiness (aggregation) and increase the fibrinolisis – which leads to delay blood clotting. It is mildly antihypertensive and has antioxidant activity. Three reviews of double-blind studies in humans have found that garlic can lower levels of blood cholesterol in adults by about 10%.

Garlic has been shown to be as effective as drug bezafibrate to lower cholesterol levels. However, a recent placebo-controlled study found no effect for garlic in lowering cholesterol.Several double-blind trial also suggest that it may prevent atherosclerosis. Garlic is also helpful for people with intermittent claudication (cramping in the lower legs secondary to poor blood flow), according to a study controlled.

Note: Garlic keeps only the control clots, an advantage for people with cardiovascular disease risk. It can not effectively replace drug stronger anticoagulant, its primary value is as a preventative.
