Leonardo da Vinci drew it as two separate glands, one on each side of the larynx, like a butterfly. The thyroid gland is a neuroendocrine, is located on the windpipe, just below the Adam&#8217;s apple, next to the thyroid cartilage. The gland weighs between 15 and 30 grams in adults, and consists of two lobes joined by the isthmus. The thyroid is controlled by the hypothalamus and pituitary.</p>
<p>The thyroid participates in the production of hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones are primarily responsible for regulating the body&#8217;s basal metabolic rate, affecting growth and the degree of functionality of other body systems. The thyroid also synthesized the hormone calcitonin, which plays an important role in calcium homeostasis.</p>
<p>The most important hormone produced by the thyroid gland contains iodine, and is called thyroxine. This has two effects on the body, controls the production of energy in the body and is necessary to maintain the basal metabolic rate to normal.<span id="more-487"></span></p>
<p>Iodine is an essential component is this process of production of thyroid hormones, especially T3 and T4.</p>
<p>What are the functions of the thyroid gland</p>
<p>• It regulates metabolism and overall body development.</p>
<p>Whereas the most important regulators of metabolism and body development, we can mention the following actions of thyroid hormones in the body:</p>
<p>• They have a thermoregulatory action.</p>
<p>• They are necessary for proper growth and development.</p>
<p>• Increase consumption of oxygen.</p>
<p>• Involved in the process of muscle contraction and intestinal motility.</p>
<p>• stimulate the synthesis and degradation of proteins.</p>
<p>• Balance and regulate mucoproteins and extracellular water.</p>
<p>• Have action in the synthesis and degradation of fats.</p>
<p>• Involved in glycogen synthesis and utilization of glucose (sugar).</p>
<p>• They are basic in the formation of vitamin A from carotenes.</p>
<p>• Stimulate the growth and differentiation.</p>
<p>• They are essential for nervous system development, central and peripheral.</p>
<p>• Participate in the development and tooth eruption.</p>
<p>• It regulates the body&#8217;s sensitivity.</p>
<p>The Thyroid virtually all physiological functions of the organism, activating and maintaining the rhythm and life balance.</p>
<p>Reactions in the body of a thyroid hormone deficiency:</p>

However, more subtle forms of thyroid dysfunction, such as hypothyroidism or subclinical hyperthyroidism, more challenging.</p>
<p>Hyperthyroidism is characterized by an overactive thyroid due to a metabolic disorder in which excess thyroid gland function leads to a hypersecretion of thyroid hormones. The effects of this disorder causes symptoms such as tachycardia, weight loss, anxiety, nervousness and tremors.</p>
<p>Hypothyroidism is associated with an underactive thyroid gland, the effects of which cause symptoms such as hoarse voice, lethargy, slow speech, memory disturbances, constipation, fatigue, dry and rough skin, hair loss, drowsiness, impaired fertility, decreased libido, impotence, irregular periods, unexplained weight gain, etc..</p>

Hair grows at an average rate of 2.5 cm (1 inch) every two months and each hair grows for 2 to 6 years, remains at that length for a short period and finally falls, then a new hair begins to grow in place.
