Nutrients and Natural Treatments of Smokers
People who smoke often have deficiencies in many nutrients, including zinc, calcium, folate, vitamins C and E, beta carotene, lycopene and essential fatty acids in the families of omega-3 and omega-6.
There are many possible causes for this deficiency, including free radicals in cigarette smoke that destroy natural antioxidants, however, for some nutrients the most important single cause could be poor diet rather than the very act of smoking ( smokers have, on average, less balanced diets than nonsmokers.)
Some of the negative effects is the decrease in the levels of vitamin C in about 25% in people who smoke fewer than 20 cigarettes and 40% in those smoking 40 cigarettes a day or more. This decrease causes an increase in free radicals causing cellular aging body.
In addition, some evidence suggests that folate supplements or vitamin C could improve arterial function in smokers, thereby potentially helping to prevent heart disease. (more…)
